POSITION PROFILE - Chief Operating Officer (COO)

kpCompanies is leading the search for the next Chief Operating Officer for Summit Academy.  This position provides executive-level leadership and direction for Student Services and Institutional Effectiveness while supporting the mission of the institution. This person should be mission driven and be passionate about making a difference in students’ lives.  

 

THE ORGANIZATION

Summit Academy OIC is an accredited, nonprofit Career and Technical Education (CTE) Institute located in North Minneapolis.  Summit offers specializations and industry certifications for in-demand careers in Information Technology (IT), Construction, and Medical Administrative Assistant through 20-week accredited programs, delivering academic rigor alongside marketable skills and connections to employers. Summit’s workforce-driven model also offers accelerated 10-week GED training.  Summit Academy OIC was created after two established training and job placement programs merged forces in 1996: Twin Cities Opportunities Industrialization Center and Two or More. The resulting Summit Academy was a vocational training center focused on giving low-income adults access to skills for the jobs of today and tomorrow. Embracing a comprehensive community focus, we located ourselves in the heart of North Minneapolis, where we now have two campuses today.

Today, our mission is still to empower individuals to develop their ability to thrive and become contributing citizens in their communities and economic drivers of the State of Minnesota. POSITION OVERVIEW

This position is responsible for the overall planning, management, evaluation and improvement of Summit’s student support services, daily operation of Summit’s North Star Innovation Center campus, participation in the STEM District of Minneapolis, and operation of the Best Buy Teen Tech Center located at Summit’s main campus. This position ensures compliance with standards of Summit’s accrediting and regulatory bodies. Responsibilities include: management of enrollment, advising, and career placement services; providing guidance in the development and implementation of programming and policies; and managing the budget for all related departments.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lead the daily operation of the North Side Innovation Center extension campus.
2. Lead department managers in enrollment, advising, career placement services, volunteer management, the Best Buy Teen Tech Center, and the STEM District.
3. Establish and implement policies and procedures to support institutional accreditation and state licensure requirements.
4. Develop, implement, and evaluate strategies for growth and meeting contract obligations for funder requirements.
5. Support and maintain effective relationships among instructional divisions, student services, administration, staff, faculty, students, and external partners through strategic planning, goal-setting, and evaluation.
6. Work with organizational leaders and teams to support the recruitment, retention, and placement of students and graduates.
7. Establish and promote appropriate linkages between institutional programming and workforce development.
8. Provide leadership in guiding, planning, implementing, evaluating and modifying administrative processes and operational procedures across the institution and STEM District.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, education, or a related field 
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in campus or organizational leadership
  • Master’s degree or higher preferred.
  • Leadership experience working in a higher education institution with accreditation and regulatory responsibilities.

 **This is a full-time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). It is eligible for overtime pay if previously approves hours exceed 40 hours per week.  The expected hours of the position are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and is onsite.  This role operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.  This is largely a sedentary role; There may be some walking, bending, carrying of light items, standing, etc.
