Vice President of Finance – Minnesota Opera

kpCompanies is leading the search for the next Vice President (VP) of Finance with the Minnesota Opera. This is a critical business leadership position for the organization. The Vice President of Finance works in close partnership with the leadership team acting as a strategic business partner to their peers and the executive leadership team. The VP will also work
closely with the board and board committees. This is a hands-on leadership role best suited for individuals who like to work on both strategic projects and day to day execution.

Reporting to the President and General Director, the VP Finance (VP) directs the financial affairs of the organization and prepares financial analyses of operations for the guidance of management. This includes budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting (internal and external), cash management, insurance, tax filing, financial audit, and internal controls. The VP reports directly to the President and General Director and works in collaboration with the Board, Finance Committee, Investment Committee, Audit Committee and the Leadership team. 
  • Supervise Controller, Staff Accountant, and System Administrator. Develop, monitor, and report on all budgets and financial statements; provide financial analysis as needed.
  • Complete monthly analysis of results, balance-of-year forecast, risk and opportunities assessments.
  • Provide training to budget managers on the budget and forecast process.
  • Work closely with all budget managers on understanding their actuals and budgets, providing hands on assistance as needed.
  • Manage forecasting, cash-flow projections, and finance process improvements.
  • Develop and improve internal controls.
  • Lead completion of external audit and tax filings.
  • Present financial results, budgets, and audit reports to the Finance Committee and Board.
  • Assist President and General Director in exploring new strategies and revenue streams.
  • Support Leadership team in long term financial planning and modeling.
  • Oversee all activities of accounting department; assure reports are accurate and timely.
  • Perform month end activities (book journal entries, account reconciliations, etc).
  • Direct all phases of cash management and bank relations.
  • Coordinate all risk management activity.
  • Serve as liaison with business partners (Insurer, Investment Firm, Banks, 403(b) Vendor, and Audit Firm).
  • Oversee the System administrator in charge of IT systems planning, IT user support, and IT management.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required
  • 7 or more years of experience in management of accounting and financial reporting including cash management, cash forecasting, budgeting, and internal controls monitoring
  • 3 or more years supervisory experience including one or more years managing direct reports
  • Advanced level Excel data analysis skills required (ex. Create pivot tables from scratch, v-lookup, h-lookup, work with existing pivot tables, graphs, charts) required
  • Experience leading an accounting or finance team within a non-profit accounting organization preferred
  • Exposure to grant accounting, investment accounting, endowments, restricted and non-restricted donations preferred
  • CPA or CMA preferred 
  • Experience working with software system Sage Intacct and Tessitura preferred
  • Experience managing IT preferred 
  • Ability to monitor, evaluate, and implement accounting systems and processes 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of US GAAP and financial reporting. 
  • Experience working with IT staff to develop and implement new processes and systems that increased efficiency in a fast-moving environment.  
  • Experience working with cross functional teams to strategic plans from idea through risk analysis, budgeting, implementations, and monitoring ongoing results

  • Experience or desire to create presentations for the Board, Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and Audit Committee
  • Affinity with the mission of the Minnesota Opera.
