Sr. Director, Finance - Goodwill-Easter Seals

Position Profile

The Director of Finance works closely with the CFO to oversee all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. This position leads all day-to-day finance operations and manages a team of three managers and indirectly manages 10 staff members. The Director, Finance also has functional responsibility over accounting, financial analysis, non-profit grant and service revenues, and accounts payable. The Director of Finance ensures that Goodwill-Easter Seals has the systems and procedures in place to support effective operations and meet all audit requirements. This position is a strategic thought partner with the CFO and works closely with other organizational Directors, Managers, and their staff, not only to help them understand finance and accounting requirements, but also to explore how the finance function can more effectively support both operations and the mission of the organization.

Responsibilities:

 

Strategic Leadership

  • Directs finance and accounting functions to ensure accurate accounting of the organization’s operations and provide, management reporting, and analysis. Prepares and presents financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.
  • In partnership with two Accounting Managers, oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Analyzes financial data and presents financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicates monthly, quarterly, and annual financial results and keeps CFO and other senior leadership abreast of Goodwill-Easter Seals financial status.
  • Maintains internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenues, costs and program budgets, and actual expenditures.
  • Leads the year-end financial audits with external auditors, including GESMN financial audit, the Foundation financial audit, and the Federal Single Audit.
  • Leads the Form 990 preparation and filing with tax preparers (GESMN and the Foundation).
  • Oversees the 401(k) audit, which is led by the Accounting Operations Manager
  • Leads the Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) audit.
  • Ensures monthly reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts are completed by reviewing and approving the reconciliations. Approves all monthly journal entries.
  • Collaborates with all divisions to ensure that they receive adequate financial information and understand how to utilize the information.

 

Leadership and Management of Staff

  • Provides leadership and management of staff by providing clear goals and objectives, encouraging staff development, inspiring staff retention, and appropriately distributing responsibilities to ensure departmental processes and procedures are effectively and efficiently delivered to all internal and external customers.
  • Leverages strengths of the current finance team members, helps to clarify roles and responsibilities, and develops and implements training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Manages team to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Recruits, develops, and leads a diverse staff.
  • Meets regularly with team members to boost employee morale and productivity and foster a sense of team.
  • Evaluates employee performance on a regular basis and recommend salary increases as appropriate.
  • Identifies training needs and develops employees to maximize potential and prepare them for future growth.
  • Ensures that disciplinary action is taken as required.

 

Budgets/Forecasting

Oversees the annual budgeting process for the organization, which is led by the Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis. This includes the income statement, the capital budget, the balance sheet, and cash flow. The goal is to minimize the internal resources required by staff in the budgeting process while achieving a realistic budget that is understandable and promotes

accountability. Employs appropriate analytical tools such as trend lines, historical values, metrics and benchmarks to effectively evaluate the reasonableness of budgeted values.

  • Directs internal users in the budgeting process and budgeting/financial terms and concepts.
  • Employs analytics and metrics in the budget process to allow users to see trends and develop an understanding of major variances.
  • Reviews the budget presentation for the Executive Team and Board of Directors.
  • Oversees the importing of the budget accurately and timely into the accounting software.
  • Oversees the quarterly forecasting process for the Organization.
  • Directs/assists in long-range budgets/plans and reviews “what-if” proposals in terms of expansion, new services, mergers, financing, etc.

 

Grant Accounting

In partnership with the Accounting Operations Manager, oversees all project/program and grants accounting, ensuring that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period and reviewing financial reporting materials for government, corporate and foundation grants.

  • Collaborates with the Grant and Services Revenue Accountant and the Government Grant
  • Administrator regarding proposals and financial information required.
  • Approves monthly grant billings.
  • Oversees the preparation of monthly aging of accounts receivable; monitoring and ensuring timely collections.

 

Other Duties

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with established philosophies to achieve the overall objectives of the organization.
  • Handles company property and the property of others in a responsible manner and reports any knowledge or suspicion of theft or other misappropriation of funds.
  • Keeps immediate manager promptly and fully informed of problems or unusual matters of significance coming to his/her attention to facilitate prompt corrective action as appropriate.
  • Maintains a favorable working relationship with all other employees to foster and promote a cooperative and harmonious working climate, which will be conducive to improving employee morale, productivity and efficiency/effectiveness.
  • Projects a favorable image of Goodwill-Easter Seals to promote its aims and objectives and foster and enhance public recognition and acceptance of all its areas of endeavor.
  • Maintains confidentiality and executes “Need to Know” information exchange and communications as appropriate.
  • Understands and actively supports the organization’s inclusion and diversity efforts.
  • Responsible for being familiar with GESMN’s employee handbook and organizational policies as well as where to find the most up-to-date versions on the intranet
  • Responsible for learning, understanding, and practicing all safety policies and procedures set forth related to COVID-19 in the GESMN COVID-19 Preparedness Plan
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Education, Experience, and Other Qualifications

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated technical accounting expertise (i.e., GAAP principles). Nonprofit experience preferred
  • Financial and analytical skills; experience with budgeting/forecasting and funding/grant development
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written and oral presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of management, supervision and training practices.
  • Consistently looking for process improvement and leads staff through change management. Ability to manage the training and mentoring of staff.

 

Ideal Experience/Qualifications

  • 5-8 years of relevant experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.
